Mopey Thursday 5.3.12

It's been a shitty few days, weather sucks, feel like I'm in a funk...  so beer!

So yep, if ya didn't know, Narragansett's making themselves some seasonal/craft offerings!  YAY? or.. um? scared?  They're kickin it gangsta style here.. with a pre-Prohibition style Cream Ale at 5.0% ABV and 28 IBUs.  Crystal clear light amber and a nice through and through head..  wicked faint nose.. just malts here.  Graham crackers, toasty/nutty... touches of grassy hops and the ever-so-subtle smooth sweet vanilla..  Dare I say the beer lives up the name?  This is rather smooth and creamy, in a super-light kinda way.  Almost one dimensional in taste, faint pale malts with just hints of grassy hops and a lemon peel note.  Not a blow-your-socks-off sorta beer, but nice, easy drinking.. great for the summer - full, but light and refreshing!

Secondly, Narragansett's spring seasonal - Helles Bock.  A 6.5% ABV 32 IBU take on a classic Bavarian Bock.  Apparently rams in Germany come down in the spring, so they put a ram on the can?  Got it? Cool.. let's drink!  Call me irresponsible.. but I can't drink these out of the can... I get that metallic tinge that permeates the entire taste, ruins it for me.  I can handle the regular 'gansett from a can, at a dive bar or show, but when I wanna enjoy a brew (Yes, even an Alchemist Heady Topper) I need it in a glass.  Allows the brew to breathe, yada yada..  Another transparent, golden pour.. interesting nose.  I'm seriously getting Swedish Fish here.. so, cherries?  Crazily bready, hints of caramel and butterscotch, grassy herbal hops underneath it all.  Another smooth almost creamy brew by the 'gansett folks.. nutty, faux-fruit taste.. doughy and caramel with a quick bite of grassy/herbal hop bitterness...follows through smooth and full, almost no sign of alcohol at all.  Crazy easy to drink, just warm enough to help the slight chill that spring can bring, just enough to refresh you when it gets warmer..  fairly impressed!
