10.5 - Smugglin' Time

So in a growler exchange* I ended up on the receiving end of a growler of Funky Buddha's Nib Smuggler.

*I forgot the beer I was sending him was bottle-only, not available for growler fill.  needless to say, he hooked me up like whoa and I owe him something in the near future*

Funky Buddha Lounge and Brewery - Nib Smuggler
a 6.5% ABV Porter brewed with (duh) cocoa nibs.  First off, love the growler design.  Secondly.. almost can't go wrong with a chocolate porter.  It pours a deep chocolate brown with a dense mocha head.  The cocoa and milk chocolate notes almost ooze out of the glass.  They're bold, but not full... like they're in powder-form.  But there's also underlying vanilla, iced coffee, caramel and the smallest amount of booze.  The taste and body follow this, definitely lighter than the boldness of the nose would hint at, but just as much flavor as a rich imperial stout.  Tons of chocolate (again, fuckin duh), but some crisp coffee notes and carb make it a bit easier to drink.  There's some oily chocolate characteristics that add to some vanilla sweetness creating a nice, slick finish.  The beer's lighter-than-expected body make it easier to drink, and the nose is by face the most complex aspect of it.  But a very different take on a fairly common style, highly unique.
