1.1.13 - It Begins

2013 is here.  The Mayans were clearly wrong.. as noted with the previous Enjoy By post.. but the next year  has clearly arrived and we're all here.  2013 is gonna be big, folks.  Welcome to the year where yours truly becomes the first official Backlash Beer rep!  Stay tuned for all the info you could ever want!

So to kick off the year right, let's check out Backlash's first offering from the Apocalypse Series - Conquest

The idea here was to release one beer every month from September through December, corresponding to each of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse - Conquest, War, Famine, and Death.  Badass, right?  Well here rides Conquest!   Conquest rode into town on a white horse, aiming to take the land over.  This Belgian-style White IPA at 5.5% ABV aims to do just that as well.  They took a Belgian Wit recipe and dry-hopped the bejeezus outta it.  Golden straw in color with a decent head.. the nose is the star of this beer.  Released in mid-September, this nose will take you straight to the tropics in summertime..  grapefruit and tropical citrus are huge here with a healthy kick of bold hops.  Citrusy again, but man are they there.  White IPAs definitely do not have this sorta tropical kick..  Wheaty and citrusy taste, it balances the line between sweet and drying.  Coriander and orange peel are present with more grapefruity hops at the start of the sip/when the beer's at it's coldest that transitions into slightly more piney/grassy hops towards the end.  The Belgian yeast imparts that distinctive note while the subtle hop notes set it apart from any typical witbier.  Doesn't quite fit the mold for any Belgian style or Wit, and the hops aren't as in-your-face as your typical IPA.. this one slips nicely into both styles as a rider on a horse slipping into a medieval town to rage all hell.   Solid effort, guys!
