Sunset in July

So it's a Friday night in July, you're in the Boston area and want good beers.  What do you do?  Go to Sunset of course!

(Don't even bother asking what Sunset is.. or which one.  If you need to ask, you don't deserve their selection)

Does that look familiar?  I think not!  That's the appeal of Sunset, you can almost always try something you've never even heard of!

Picobrouwerij Alvinne / Den Bierzolder - Melchior.  Listed as a strong Belgian Pale Ale at 11.00% ABV.  Listed as a mustard beer..guessing only mustard seeds used in this brew as no notable aroma or taste of mustard here.  Gorgeously cloudy with swirls of the yeast and a pale/beige head.  Very sweet fruit aroma, big bread malts..  apple, banana, pear, apricot here.  Expected Belgian funk and a touch of alcohol linger on the nose.  Big and tart, very sweet, very fruity.  Touches of a slight mustard seed spice and honey sweetness before leading into the malty tart finish.  Big bready malty, lighter sweet cracker malts and hints of floral hoppiness play with the funk and surprisingly almost hidden booze note..  this is scary easy to drink for an 11% beer, but damned good!

Secondly, I finally got to try the Mikkeller - Beer Geek Breakfast - a coffee oatmeal stout at 7.5% ABV.  This has a lore around it similar to the Founder's - Breakfast Stout.. this is more readily available and honestly, better.  Supposedly use French-pressed coffee in the brew.  Crazy dark pour and a fast disappearing head.  Huge fresh brewed coffee aroma here, rich and black, deep and smoky.  Some chocolate malt notes in here as well.  Very light taste for the pour and nose.  Bitter taste, but not in any hoppy way at all, pure coffee here.  Bitter dark chocolate, hints of woody and roasted malts.. some other sweeter caramel-esque malts to balance out the bitter and it gets a bit more full and velvety smooth as the beer warms a bit.  Really nice smooth, light finish with just a touch of alcohol mixing with roasty coffee flavors that leave you reaching for the glass again.  Huzzah!
