Bottling and Drinking Homebrews

Time to bottle that delicious Maple Spruce Smoked Porter of mine.. and, once again it goes without saying, you gotta have homebrews when doing such a task!  (oh, and had a quick taste before some went into the bottles... let's just say DAMN!  Can't wait to see how this'll turn out.. I've got high hopes!)

I'm lucky enough to have a college friend who's becoming a great homebrewer... downside is he lives in NYC, but that's nothing a little UPS can't solve!  First up is his Pumpkin Ale from 2011.  A rich burnt orange pour, and fizzy head.  Reminds me of the Dogfish Head Punkin, rich taste, tons of malt.. a nice vanilla sweetness with fresh pumpkin mixed in.  Not much by the way of spices, which is a welcome change.  Rather carbonated and a touch on the cider-y side, but a solid pumpkin nonetheless, wicked nice!

He also sent me his take on a Pulqueza.. a hybrid style of a Tequiza and Pulque - a Mexican alcoholic drink made from the Maguey plant.  (also described as Mexican Braggot - or mead made with honey and hops) but he used agave in place of the honey.  Almost no head to this one.. a nice, sweet nose.  I'm getting honey despite having none in..agave nectar can give that sweetness too.  Not anything traditional here at all..  definite mead influence.. smooth, sweet, slightly fruity.   Very unique!

Cheers, Kirk!
