For the game tonight vs the Leafs, I invited my buddy over to crack into a few of the brews, have some wings and watch the B's mop the ice!
Tell me that's not a beautiful bottle! Kudos to my friends over at Backlash Beer Co. for another killer brew!
*disregard the weights in the background... it's all about the bottle folks! but gotta work off the beer somehow, right?!*
We kicked it off with Convergence, a 7.5% ABV..22 IBU SUPER Saison. They brewed it with homemade Beglian candi sugar and kicked up the ABV and spice to bitch slap those regular saison's out there. A beautiful golden pour, great frothy head and fruity nose with some nice hints of spice and traditional Belgian yeast. Fairly sweet taste with the citrus coming through along with apple and pear notes. A little bit of grassy hops gave way to some rye spice along with touches of pepper. A nice full-bodied finish, slightly dry with a little underlying sweetness, probably attributed to the candi sugar. The 7.5% ABV is totally hidden, making this a dangerous sessionable brew. If you haven't spotted their stuff in stores, keep your eyes peeled. They're expanding with each batch, they'll be near you soon!
Finished off the night with the 2011 Stone - Double Bastard. Have you had the Bastard? No..? Don't try this. Yes..? Be warned. This Bastard will sucker punch your kidneys while it sneaks up behind you and takes out your kneecaps. THAT'S the Double Bastard. 10.5% ABV and 'classified' IBUs.. copper-brown pour with a nice off-white head. Malty sweet nose with a huge hop aroma.. citrus, grapefruit.. bits of toffee and woody earth hidden deep in the nose. A hop assault from the get-go.. some caramel and toffee malts present to help balance it out, but fully piney grapefruit hops, reminiscent of Stone IPA or Ruination. Some darker stone fruits with sticky sweet malts, higher ABV lends itself to a bit of a bourbon taste. Incredibly complex, strong, flavorful... it'll be great to see how this one ages!
"Ye shall know the Bastard, and the Bastard shall set you free"
Oh, and by the way.. B's owned.
