4.19 & 4.20 - Yard's pt I

yeah...yeah.. I went to Philly months ago.. shut it, OK?  I'm busy and I got too much damn beer.

These have clearly aged a bit.. but none are IPAs..and it's been a little over 6 months, not too much outside the realm of safe drinking..

Philadelphia Pale Ale
a 5.6% ABV and 36 IBU American Pale Ale.   Golden straw with a giant fluffy head.   Touches of light citrus on the nose with some wheat and pils malts, just a bit of yeast...rather straightforward, but nice.  The taste follows suit, very clean notes.. it's over-used, but yes, this is crisp too.  Citrus and fruit up front..barely tart.. pineapple and grapefruit with touches of apple..  the malts are crackery and bready, clean and light.  Not much of a hop profile besides the citrus..  this makes itself known in the finish with a bit more yeasty, half-cooked bread malts.  A very nice, clean take on a Pale with the incredibly faint tartness and tropical notes

Extra Special Ale
a 6.3% ABV and 44 IBU Extra Special Bitter.  A nice light ruby pour and minimal cream head.  Sweeter toasted malts, nutty and caramel, raisins and a whiff of spice.  This, of course, is a mainly malt-forward brew.  Toffee and caramel, sorta sweet, but with the faintest hops behind them to create that 'bitter' note..not heavy in any way - true the the style - making the malts almost come across as bitter.  There's some really nice fruit notes in here.. raisins, watered-down plums and figs that mix with the spice nicely.  A sweet-ish finish that makes you want another sip.  A nice take on the style that fringes into a Winter Warmer hybrid.

Thomas Jefferson's Tavern Ale

an 8.0% ABV 28 IBU English Strong Ale.  Clear amber pour, very small head.  Sweeter malts, but light in aroma.. touches of honey, dark fruits, and nuts, some citrus fruits.. super faint hint of sherry/port and a little bit of booze.  Sweet and fruity, in a nice sticky way, this tastes of honey, light caramel, raisins, red grapes and sweeter bready malts.  There's some booze and spice that come through in the middle... a slight earthy hop bitterness pokes through at the end to hold this all together.  It's like a Barleywine's baby brother.. similar dark fruits, booze and malts, but incredibly drinkable.  So far my favorite of the brews I've brought back
