Stoudts

Just got back from a weekend trip to NYC...saw all the construction at Ground Zero.  Unbelievable.  Seeing that shouldn't be the only time you feel patriotic besides on July 4th..but coming back home and remembering I had a brew with an American flag on it stirred up a little American pride in me.

and having the name American Pale Ale doesn't hurt either!  Stoudts - American Pale Ale 5.0% ABV and 41 IBUs and a wicked cool label (except the flag looks a lil weird.. maybe supposed to be a mirror image down the center?  too much thought into this..back to the beer!)  great head on this pour that stays well through the drinking and a lovely grapefruit/grassy hop profile with a decent malt aroma.  The taste is total hops..this pale ale drinks somewhat like an IPA, just a bit less bitter.  Full grapefruit/grassy/citrus hops with a rounded caramel/light grain sweetness from the malts.  Bitterness from the hops pokes through on the finish, rather piney and grassy with some nice citrus notes.  This beer has an excellent balance between the two which makes it really stand out amongst the other pale ales out there.  Nicely done, nicely American.

Fat Dog Imperial Oatmeal Stout.  DAMN!  9.0% ABV and 55 IBUs..this is one big fat dog!  Black/brown pour with a nice thick frothy head..  All the aromas of an oatmeal stout plus little kicks of the alcohol.. chocolate, molasses, coffee, hints of vanilla and a unique aged rum nose.  The rum comes through in the taste too, just enough to give is a kick and not be overly boozy.  More chocolate and robust coffee as well that give way to a slightly bitter espresso taste with some creamy vanilla/oatmeal hints.  Dark roasted malts and a slight alcohol taste round out this brew.  Picture an Imperial stout without the overly bitter chocolates/hops replaced by the dessert-like sweetness of an Oatmeal stout.  If you like the big beers but want a bit more sweetness, give this puppy a go!
