A college friend and the Asgard

So about a month ago a friend from college was in town for training for her job and wanted to meet up.  Took her to the Asgard in Cambridge for dinner and some drinks.  She's not really a beer or whisky drinker (as the Asgard is known for) so only had a glass of wine, but I took the opportunity to try two new beers of course!!

Southampton Publick House Double White Ale...  seeing as the Southampton Pumpkin Ale was tied for my favorite pumpkin beer in the Fall, I had to try this one!  Apparently it's name is fitting as its a higher O.G., higher ABV version of a witbier, white ale.  6.7% ABV and only 18 IBUs..this should be a very refreshing beer, easy drinking.  Indeed the nose is heavy on banana, citrus and very sweet malts with slight clove and spice notes in the background as with most witbiers.  A very full-bodied, yet light beer, this one come across as creamy and has the characteristics of a hefeweizen, Belgian white and witbier.  Coriander and clove come through heavy on the taste, orange and slight citrus as well as a much fuller carbonation than any while ale I've come across.  Everything about this beer is double, and thankfully the ABV is unnoticeable.  Think of a Blue Moon, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois and a Weihanstephaner Hefe-wiessbier having a crazy orgy and poppin' a baby out..  that would be this Double While.  Awesome summer beer!

I also tried a Berkshire Brewing Company (BBC) Coffeehouse Porter..which was on draught and is a nitro pour, similiar to a Guinness if you didn't know what a nitro pour is.  So therefore, not as heady as you see in the sample pic above.  Not a huge fan of the nitro pour, but I like other BBC beers, so I wanted to try it.  6.2% ABV and 36 IBUs.   Crazy amount of roasted malts on the nose, the coffee actually takes a backseat along with faint sweetness and hints of chocolate.  The bitterness of the taste come more from the coffee than any hops, as almost none are detectable.  The nitro pour imparts a creaminess I'm sure isn't present from the bomber, but still remains light in terms of a porter.  A rather sweet take on a coffee porter.. vanilla, milk chocolate and caramel malts linger along with creamy iced coffee flavors.  Want to try this one again from the bottle..  almost ready to swear off nitro pours..just not a fan.  But love me some coffee porters!
