Wailua Wheat!

So around Christmas time last year I bought a friend a bottle of wine as an early present and was given a bottle of this out of the 6pk she got as a semi-gift!  I've had the Kona Pipeline Porter and turned a lot of people onto it, so might as well see what else Kona has to offer!

As with the Pipeline Porter, Kona put their own tropical spin on a standard beer.  They used 100% Kona coffee beans in the porter, not only giving it a caffiene kick, but a solid coffee taste akin to a Dunkins' iced instead of attributing the taste to the malts used.  Here they did a standard wheat ale with fruit, but instead of lemon peel, orange, watermelon, etc...  they used passionfruit!  5.4% ABV and a crisp 15 IBUs.  It poured this beautiful hazy straw color.  Slightly creamy citrus smell, a bit of grassy hops, wheat and definitely passionfruit notes.   Very light and crisp!  Lemon zest taste is immediate, a great sweet wheat flavor, and the finish is all passionfruit which is slightly sour, and a bit of citrusy hops.  The initial taste is a bit unpleasant, but the lingering battle between slightly citrus hops and oddly sour notes from the passionfruit is terrific!  A nice alternative to the standard wheat ale.
