Monday night.. got some crap going on.. BEER!
Beer solves all!
Samuel Adams Longshot - A Dark Night in Munich.
another round of the Samuel Adams Longshot winner's beer from 2012.. oops! definitely more than a few months old! old well.. A 5.9% ABV Munich Dunkel brewed by Corey Martin. It pours a rich mahogany brown with an off-white head. It has a muddled, nutty sweet nose, touches of caramel. There's some bready earthy hops hidden in there somewhere. It's smooth and sweet, but almost too sweet. It's like a much lower ABV barleywine. Nutty, peaty malts with caramel, thick toffee and prunes. This has some chocolate and vanilla sweetness to the end and that earthy/nutty tone you associate with dark German beers, but lacks a crispness. Despite it's light body, it comes across as thick and cloying. Nice and bold, but not outstanding.

Samuel Adams Longshot - Derf's Secret Alt
Brewed by Sam Adams employee, Fred Hessler, this is a 9.5% ABV "sticke" Altbier - or special version of a brewery's Alt. Ruby brown, the head fades immediately. It's got a fruity and malty nose - touches of plum and raspberry with nutty and caramel malts. There's an underlying citrus tone, perhaps grapefruit... Unfortunately almost as soon as I cracked this open, the sore throat and strained voice I had been nursing all week suddenly turned into stuffy sinuses and pressure, killing most of my sense of smell and taste! For a higher ABV brew, this is far more crisp than the Munich Dunkel. There is a sticky sweet caramel/toffee tone as well as brown bread and raisins. At the front/end, there seems to be an lemon-peel esque hop note pairing with brown sugar and only a touch of alcohol heat. I feel like it'd be a bit better if I wasn't feeling like utter poo! I'll revisit when I review the 3rd beer in the pack!
