Happy Beer Day & Happy Session Beer Day

WOOO, beer holiday(s)!   Today is the 79th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition by the signing of the act that allowed 3.2% (and under) beer and wine to be brewed and sold in the US in 1933!   AND some folks in the craft industry started to push this year for an unofficial holiday for session beer.  By most standards, session beer is 5.0% ABV or under, some hold it to 4.5% and some even to the strict standard of 4.0%.  Easiest to just say under 5.0% ABV..  session beer gets its name because you can have a drinking session of these without really getting intoxicated.  Well, as long as you don't chug 'em!

To start off the night (I later went out and had some higher ABV beer..but it's also National Beer Day too!) I hunted down some High & Mighty Brewing Co beers, a local MA brewery that does mainly under-5.0% ABV beers!  Divine Brown - a 4.5% brown ale brewed with a dose of coffee.   nice roasty chestnut brown pour and giant fluffy head.. just hints of roasted malts, cocoa powder and coffee beans on the nose.  Light, crisp brown ale with touches of light sweet caramel, milk chocolate and of course, coffee... sweet, creamy iced coffee.  Not a complex beer, but a very great example of what can be done with lower alcohol beers.

I done messed up and the picture I took of the 2nd beer came out all screwy.. so here's a lovely stock photo!  High & Mighty - Two-Headed Beast - a 4.5% ABV stout brewed with chocolate.  A nice brown/black pour and another huge head...roasty malts with hits of milk and dark chocolate on the nose.  This is a crisp beer that doubles as a full creamy stout, very impressive!  Like a nice chocolate liquor, sans 80% of the booze.  Smooth rich chocolate with bittersweet undertones...  roasty, nutty malts and hints of vanilla.  A really nice, easy-drinking stout with a ton of flavor.  Hurrah, session beer!
