Sixpoint Tap Takeover

I had found out about a Sixpoint tap takeover at a well-known craft place in Jamaica Plain that I had never been to, but always heard about... so why not?!  The place was VeeVee..  I was a little surprised though.  Nice bottle selection, mainly local which is very cool, but only 4 taps.  Then again, the place had maybe 15 tables and a bar that seats 10.  So I guess well-known for having quality over quantity?  Anywho, the tap takeover consisted of Sixpoint's Mad Scientist small-batch brews, #4-7.  Apparently, they got one of the last kegs of #4 in existence and the first keg of #7 to be tapped in MA.  Very cool!

My friend and I both got a sampler of the brews, mine is on the right and in correct order, but got a little flashed out.  So on the left sampler, bottom to top the order goes 7, 6, 5 and then 4.

Mad Scientist #4 - Hibiscus Ale.  A 5.5% ABV witbier..  Faint head, orange/red pour with the typical witbier aromas with some nice floral mixed in.  A nice yeasty brew with decent fruit notes and a mildly sweet floral taste.  Had a faintly lingering tartness to it as well.. slightly tough to characterize, but very cool overall.

Mad Scientist #5 - Shiso Beer.  a 6.0% ABV Belgian ale brewed with shiso, a Japanese herb similar to anise or fennel (or so Wikipedia tells me..)  Nothing too unique on the nose, basically a straight-forward Belgian.. yeasty, slightly fruity and a crisp, cracker malt.  Only in the taste does a faint spice come through, not overly minty or peppery..  It sort of layers itself behind the Belgian backbone.  Read some people were getting a great taste from the herb..  maybe this keg was a bit old?  Would've been awesome to get the full profile from the shiso.

Mad Scientist #6 - Wed Hop Ale..  a 7.0% ABV Strong Ale using freshly harvested hops from upstate NY.  This was my least favorite beer.  There wasn't much outstanding to it at all, the aroma and taste were simple East coast IPA-like..  something was a bit off in the finish.  A sort of tinny bitterness lingered..  starting to suspect something off with the lines...  I heard great things about these brews and some are just falling way short..

Mad Scientist #7 - Cranberry Porter..   a 5.4% ABV Porter with freshly harvested MA cranberries.  Nice roasty aromas and traditional Porter tastes, only slightly lighter and more crisp as I've come to expect from Sixpoint.  Disappointed to find the cranberries weren't too present.  A very slight sweet tartness came through in the finish as the beer warmed...  not sure how much cranberry they used, but they probably could've used more!

Not a bad tasting, would've liked to have had some of these a bit fresher.. but found a new chill spot and had some good beers..  oh and a dope-ass burger with herb aioli, whatchu know about my high-class palate!?
