10.10.11-10.16.11 Recap

Fell behind with a few of the beers I pulled from my stash last week, therefore you get a lump update!  Had a fairly busy week and wasn't feelin too hot for most of it, so I didn't get as many as in as I had hoped either...sad week!

Breckinridge Brewery - Vanilla Porter!  Had this lil guy while checkin the new episode of SOA on
Tues night.    4.7% ABV and 16 IBU..low across the board, even for a porter.  Average pour
with a head that never really materialized.  Sad face!  No head is usually not a good sign for such
a low ABV beer.  The nose was somewhat like a cream soda with some roasted malt/coffee notes..
fairly weak.  The taste followed suit.  I'm hoping I haven't been sitting on some of there beers
too long.  This tasted like a flat cream soda with some cocoa powder and medium-bodied
coffee mixed in.  Some of the darker malt notes come through and the vanilla is somewhat muted,
more like extract than pure vanilla taste.  A slight sour note on the tail end that lessened as the beer
warmed a bit, and the taste improved slightly as such, too.  Probably shouldn't be drank straight from the fridge, but it seems overall that the beer couldn't quite be what it wants to be and ends up a bit
weakened in it's flavors

That night, if any of you had the chance to see, there was this wicked cool ring around the moon.  Not sure what caused it, but take a look-see!  Had a good amount of surrounding light, so I only used a 5 second exposure

On Friday night, had my usual movie n beer night, except I spent too long deciding what kinda wings to order, so we only watched some stand-up, oops!  I had two that night, with this being one.  Got it cause the packie had it reduced..figured it was the last one and they didn't want to re-order?  Naw..I was duped...reduced cause it kinda wasn't good.  Eel River Brewery - Organic Acai Berry Wheat - 22oz.  4.0% ABV and 15 IBUs...super light beer.  Nice golden orange pour, but again with the no head!  Some sort of atmospheric conditions that gave us that halo are affecting beer pours?!  Sadly, the color is where I stopped being impressed.  There wasn't much to the nose here.. faint citrus, a little light malts, the faintest of faint berry-ish hints.  Somewhat sweet, but nothing stand out.  The taste..maybe this was well past it's prime..it was reduced afterall.. how long was it on the shelf?  But the taste was very watery, not many remnants of any wheat beer at all with a slightly tart fruity taste that comes and goes.  Not much sweetness here and a rather empty finish.  May have been decent in it's prime, but I honestly couldn't finish this, and that's RARE my friends.  Have any of you tried this or any Eel River brews?  Any different takes?

Finished the night off with this:  Avery - Karma.  A Belgian-style Pale Ale at 5.2% ABV and 10 IBUs.  BONUS!  This was a summer brew too!  And we have a head, folks!  No curse this week!  The nose had some surprising hops to it with a honey/tangerine sweetness..nice blend of the Belgian and Pale aromas, with some caramel notes mingled with very faint spice.  The taste - super smooth with being full, yet not heavy.  Heavy on the orange/lemon citrus tastes with some peppery spice.  Mimicking the taste, a surprising little bit of hops poke through, despite the low IBU.  Towards the end a little bit of that Belgian banana-esque taste comes through with the slightest bit of sour... not a strong malt profile in the taste at all.  This one is super easy to drink, and very well-rounded .  Grab this one and feel the good Karma all night!
