So, Dogfish Head ain't your usual football game beer, but here's the thing: this amazing girl bought it for me! Add that onto a Patriots preseason spanking of the Jags = one awesome night!
Despite the Pats sitting almost every major starter, they whooped the Jaguars 47-12. The rooks and 2nd/3rd stringers looked pretty damn good...let's see what they look like this week, hopefully with Brady, Welker and crew making some sort of appearance! Now onto the beer!!!
Apologies for the glassware..but anyway, she bought me Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron - 50 IBUs and (holy fucking hell) 12.0% ABV!!! It's barrel-aged for 2 years in Paraguyan Palo Santo wood in , get this, a 10,000 gallon brewing vessel, the largest wooden brewing vessel since pre-Prohibition! DAMN! A thick, viscous molasses-colored beer, rather surprised by the amount of carbonation in this bad boy. A super complex nose with dark, dried fruits (think plums, cherries, blackberries, etc), brown sugar, maple syrup, toffee, heavily roasted malts and hints of earthy wood. The taste kicks in with a sharp alcohol bite, followed immediately by strong chocolate, molasses and sweet coffee. Swirling around that is a mild hoppiness balanced, and slightly overpowered by dark roasted malts. Hints of the wood and its contributing earthy and syrupy notes fade in and out along with light spice and some smoke.. the finish is totally thick, smooth and sweet, with the the malts, dried fruits and mild sweetness from the molasses/brown sugar/syrup. Super complex, super smooth, a great sipping beer and, despite having that 'signature' Dogfish Head taste, a fairly unique beer. Thanks, Becky!
Best mug ever. It'd behoove you to mention the bar it came from, since they serve more beer on tap than most bars even know exist: http://www.macgregorsgrillandtaproom.net/
ReplyDeleteand yes, the beer list are all taps!
