Two Italian Reds

MORE WINE!!!  So about a week ago, my liquor store had a tasting of new Italian wines that we just got in, and get this...the rep from the distribution company..yeah, his name was Jim Guido.  LEGIT Guido..  looked the part and his actual name was Guido, kid you not!!  And of course, I got to bring some home!  I forget what the whites were, but they weren't bad at all.  Took home two reds: a Barbera D'Alba and a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo.

Tre Fattori Barbera D'Alba!  For Italian wines..this means it's a Barbera from the area of Alba.  This is a deep ruby red wine with a lightly medium body.  It has apparently been aged for 3 years, one of which was on oak.  This is evident from the spice notes that are dominant on the later part of the taste..this wine starts with mellow dark fruit and plum notes that fade into the spice and hints of oaky earth rather nicely.  A fairly robust wine that  isn't overpowering, smooth yet bold..a great match to rich, saucy dishes.

Next up..a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo by Le Pigole.  A 2009 red wine at 12.5% ABV...deep, deep red off-set by wonderful fruity aromas with hints of peach and sweet spice.   And wow, the aroma does not let the taste down at all!  This is a killer value wine!  Sweet cherries, blackberry, plum with hints of citrus fruit and red apple... an incredibly soft, smooth, powerfully flavorful wine with a slight tannic kick at the finish to remind you that you're drinking a red.  An awesome take on an up-and-coming varietal!
